A newsletter for 83 footer Sailors
Dear 83footer
I would like to speak with your organization when you have time, while removing a number of abandoned vessels we located the CG83525. She is scheduled for disposal later this summer and I am working with the local CG commander out of Rio Vista. I would like to know if you would like a piece of the deck and photos of the vessel before destruction. Also if I can assist in the completing the eval by looking for artifacts let me know.
Thanks

IN MEMORIUMWink, I just wantedto let you know that my father, James C. Maburn, passed away on Friday, March 18. Here is his obituary.
He was very proud of his service to his country and his boat, the 83415. I was proud to have been able to help him tell his story, which you printed on your site in 2005.
EVANSVILLE, Ind. James Carl "Jim" Maburn, 88, of Evansville, passed away quietly, surrounded by his loved ones, on Friday, March 18, 2011, at the Woodlands Nursing Home in Newburgh.
Jim was born in Morganfield, Ky., on August 29, 1922, to the late James Roy and Hallie (Harding) Mabern. The family moved to Evansville when Jim was 7 years old. Jim attended Central High School before transferring into the first class of the newly opened Mechanic Arts technical high school (the forerunner of North High), from which he graduated in June 1940.
Jim enlisted directly after graduation into the U.S. Coast Guard serving in anti-submarine duty after war was declared. He was Chief Machinist Mate on a patrol boat sent to Poole, England for the Normandy landings. His boat supported the second wave that landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France on D-Day. After the liberation of Normandy, Jim was made Chief of Engine Repair at the naval base in Cherbourg, France. It was there he met his first wife, the late Monique (Potaire) Maburn (1927-1973). They were married and moved to Evansville in 1946. Jim graduated from Lane Technical Institute with a degree in Industrial Engineering.
In 1951, Jim began his long career in civil engineering at International Steel Company. He became Superintendent of steel erection in 1953, supervising construction of such buildings as the Bell Telephone Building in Indianapolis; the Opera House-Performing Arts Center at Indiana University; and the Armco Steel Facility in Middletown, Ohio.
After 20 years at International Steel, Jim became General Manager of Cornel Leach Construction, overseeing the building of the Gibson County powerhouse in Princeton, Indiana.
He retired in 1989 to a life of RV travel, gardening, home projects and enjoying his family, with his second wife of 36 years, Wanda Jordan (Hittner) Maburn. A constant in Jim's life was the Big Band music of his youth. An avid collector, his favorite recordings of Glenn Miller played softly in the background as he passed away.
In addition to his wife Wanda, Jim is survived by son, Gerald James Maburn (Paula), of Journiac, France; daughter, Mary Anne Freeman (Carl), of Jacksonville, Fla.; brothers, Charles Mabern (Tonya) and Jerry Mabern (Debra), of Evansville; sister, Shirley Latham (Donnie), Evansville; stepsisters Wanda Hess, Evansville and Barbara Ulbricht (Robert), Francesville, Ind.; stepbrother, Maurice Dillender (Judie), Evansville; granddaughters, Emily Hoyt Riera (Eric), of Charlotte, N.C. and Allison Hoyt York (Patrick), of Ashland, Ky.; Jim had 5 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Harold "Gene" Mabern.
Jim was stepfather to Wanda's children; sons, William Hittner (Debra), Indianapolis, Joe Hittner (Becky), Evansville; and daughter Terry Wildeman (Roger), also of Evansville. Stepgrandchildren are Gabriel LaMar, Hillary Hittner, Brittany Robbins, John Hittner and Drew Hittner.
Friends may visit from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Ave. and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the church, prior to services.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 21, 2011 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 5301 Daylight Drive in Daylight, Ind. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated in Jim's name to the American Cancer Society or Little Sisters of the Poor.
